First automated general anesthesia

The administration of general anesthesia requires constant and very precise adjustment of the dose and type of drugs administered to the patient. McSleepy, designed by our team members and tested on real patients, is the first robot that can safely administer anesthetic drugs by analyzing the patient’s vital signs and other sensors in real time.

The McSleepy became the first “autopilot” for general anesthesia.

Administering anesthesia remotely requires many safety nets. First robotic endotracheal intubation

Endotracheal intubation is a crucial step in the delivery of general anesthesia. Since the patient stops breathing under the effect of the medication, it is essential to quickly insert a tube into the patient’s trachea in order to connect him to a ventilator. If this is not done, the patient will quickly run out of oxygen. Using a robotic arm with a laryngoscope mounted on it, the first robotic endotracheal intubation was performed by our team.

First robotic nerve blocks

The nerve block is used to freeze a part of the human body in order to perform a painless surgery. It involves coordinating the manipulation of an ultrasound probe and the manipulation of the needle from which the drugs will be injected. Under careful ultrasound guidance, the needle is approached to the nerve while avoiding nearby dangerous structures. Using a robotic arm, our team is the first and still the only one to have performed a robotic nerve block.

The DaVinci robot, developed by DaVinci Surgery, allows the surgeon’s manipulations to be robotized. It was obviously a unique day when the first surgery was conducted entirely by robots, both at the anesthetic and surgical levels. The anesthesia was entirely taken care of by the McSleepy, an anesthesia robot administering drugs in a closed loop based on real-time analysis of the patient’s data.
